She was a tomboy.

A Popular Girl In School

by pookietoo

The last time I saw Charlie was the day we graduated from high school. Her name was actually Charlene, but she was a tomboy, and her friends liked to call her Charlie. She liked to wear levi jeans and t-shirts, had short hair, and very seldom wore dresses.  Charlie liked to play baseball and football with the boys, and she was pretty darn good at playing them too.  She was one of the most popular girls in school.  She loved to laugh and joke around with the boys.

We met when we were twelve years old, She was quite feminine then and hung around with girls more than boys. She had beautiful long blond hair, wore makeup, and sometimes wore dresses. I was attracted to her beautiful blue eyes. She had one of the biggest smiles I know.  We were just friends for four years then started going to activities together when we were sixteen years old.  She started being a tomboy at that time.  When we were out in public going bowling or a drive-in movie, people kind of gave us strange looks because they thought she was a boy because of how she looked and dressed. We didn't care though.  I
believe some people like to judge others and not see their inner beauty.

When I asked Charlie to our high school prom, I wasn't sure how she would respond because she would have to wear a dress.  When she said "yes", I was very pleased. We went to dinner with three other couples before the prom at a nice restaurant. Charlie wore a beautiful light blue dress and blue high-heeled shoes. She wasn't used to wearing the shoes so she had to be careful. The prom went great, and she got many surprised looks because of how well she looked.  We were voted king and queen of our prom. On our graduation night everyone had a great time sharing memories and playing games at our overnight party.

I found out later that Charley decided to drink a little too much that night.  She had driven to the party herself. Both of us left the party around 2:00 the next morning. The next time I called her house, I found out from her family that she had run away from home. After she drank too much, she drove a little too fast, ran a red light, and killed a mother and two of her young children. She didn't want to tell her family what happened, but the cops did. I really missed Charlene and hoped she would return back home soon.  I hope the rest of that mother's family would find it in their heart to forgive her.
