Healing from an abusive relationship.

You're Just a Memory

by Marilyn Geller

We have shared a lifetime.
Not because we are still together,
But because we share two daughters.

We were so young years ago.
You Nineteen, me sixteen.
We called it love and were married.

We moved away from family.
Kids, we were just kids,
That soon had our own kid to raise.

You were so loving and so kind.
You protected us both.
I had no fear of the big city.

We visited our families often.
We missed familiar places.
It made sense to move back home.

We were happy with our little girl.
We planned for baby number two.
Another beautiful baby girl.

What more could I ask for?
I was a mother and a wife.
Life was pretty good for us.

Something evil crept into our life.
It took over your soul.
I didn't know what to do.

I laid on the floor, curled in pain.
You hit me. You kicked me.
I cried, but you didn't care.

I kept the pain inside and never told.
You always felt guilty and swore
It wouldn't happen again.

But it did. You would leave to
Drink with your brothers.
I would dread your coming home.

I began to hate what you became.
I prayed for you to die.
I kept a knife under my pillow.

One night you went too far.
Your dad pulled me away.
I left the next day with my girls.

Many years have passed now.
Our paths cross with each
Birthday, wedding, and grandkids.

I look at how your life has been.
Alcohol has ruined most of it.
You are a lonely man, your health waning.

I quit hating you a long time ago.
I didn't do it for you.
I did it for me. I did it for family.

Yes, we have shared a lifetime.
Even though we parted
When our girls were young.

If you should die before I do,
Will I mourn with our girls
And their families?

I want to think I might but I won't.
You will be gone. It will be over.
It is possible that Karma is real.
