Get Out the Vote

by teols2016

Studying her computer screen, Colleen dialed another number. She pressed the phone to her ear.

“Hello?” a man answered after the third long tone which indicated ringing.

“Hello. Is Margaret available?”

Though she didn't use it often, Colleen had her script memorized. Her delivery sounded natural.

“No, she’s not,” the man replied. “Who’s this?”

“My name is Colleen. I’m a volunteer helping to elect Alicia Winters to Congress and …”

“Stop calling us! Maggie’s not voting for that hack and neither am I.”

The subsequent click ended the conversation.

Colleen knew not to take his reaction personally. Too many people did not take voting seriously. Besides, she’d get the better of him.

Moving her cursor down, she clicked “Unavailable”. The campaign wouldn’t let anyone speak on a voter’s behalf. They’d keep calling to reach Margaret.

Smiling, Colleen dialed another number and listened to the long tones indicating a ringing phone.
