A house is a lover

Sebastopol

by Erik Rosales

I been here fifteen years gone
don't you know
people come and go
come and go

Though I tell you, I never considered
anythin' other 'an this
jus' wasn't my callin' I s'ppose
but you can't blame me

The banana trees don't bear me fruit
but they provide shade
and from my alcove window I
can watch the church bell ring

Mylegs won't let me join the
morning procession, but I still
watch; and in summer my southern
exposure grants me cooler shelter

I never was happier anywhere but in this house
my roof has high peaks
my dark floorboards date back to 1890
my brass chandeliers drape me with gold

Light. I'm not happy if not home.
