A neighbour gets up a petition

The Bench

by patricia dillon

I sighed deeply.
My litigious neighbour, Michelle, was at it again. She was the biggest busybody in our block of flats.
Her latest wheeze was the circulation of a petition against an initiative of the council to place a bench in the courtyard of the flats.
According to Michelle, this would simply prove a magnet for local drug dealers.
Personally, I thought a bench was a good idea. It would be convenient for us. (We lived on the ground floor.) We could even sit out in the summer.
But, needless to say, Michelle got her way. The bench was vetoed.
Now I feel better.
