Your Caring Touch

by JLR

She felt the weight of the world on her shoulders…
the pain of the past and the fear of the future.
The present's loneliness and the soul's emptiness
left her feeling like she had nothing left to give or live for.

But then you stayed steady and held her hand.
You looked into her eyes, and you understood.
You didn’t judge her or pity her or try to fix things.
You just listened and comforted and supported her.

You made her feel like she was not alone.
Like suddenly, she had a place and a purpose in the world
and had something to offer and to hope for.
You made her feel like she mattered and belonged.

You touched her face and wiped her tears.
You hugged her tight, and you calmed her fears.
You kissed her cheek, and you warmed her heart.
You healed her wounds, and you lit her path.

You are the reason she once again smiled and laughed.
The reason she dreamt and wanted to re-create.
The reason for her to grow and change.
The reason to love and live.

You became her caretaker and then her caregiver.
Her partner and soulmate.
Her inspiration and salvation.
Her everything and always.

You were the caring touch that subdued her sadness.
The gentle breeze that soothes hid the madness.
The soft whisper that quieted her noisy head.
The sweet melody that filled her void.

You were the sun that brightened her days.
The moon that guided her nights.
The star that sparked her wonder.
The fire that ignited her life.

You were the water that cleansed her dirt
The earth that ground her flight.
The air that breathed her spirit.
The wind that lifted her kite.

You were the flower that bloomed in her garden.
The fruit that ripened on her tree.
The honey that sweetened her tea.
The spice that flavored her favorite dish.

You were the book that opened her mind.
The song that moved her soul.
The art that beautified her world.
The story that enriched her life.

You were the gift that surprised her.
The treasure that delighted her.
The miracle that amazed her.
The blessing that graced her.

You were the answer to her prayers.
The fulfillment of her wishes.
The realization of her dreams.
The manifestation of her visions.

You were the joy of her heart.
The peace of her mind.
The strength of her body.
The love of her life.

You were the one who made her whole.
Who filled the gaps and healed the cracks.
You who completed the puzzle and connected the dots.
Who balanced the scales and bridged the gaps.

You were the one who understood her.
Who accepted and respected her.
Who challenged and supported her.
Who inspired and encouraged her.

You were the one who cared for her.
Who protected and comforted her.
Who helped her and guided her.
Who trusted her and believed in her.

You were the one who stayed with her
Who stood by her and fought for her.
Who waited for her and came back to her.
Who grew in faith with her and aged with her.

But then you died!  So, she too passed….

In honor and remembrance of my brother-in-law, Owen. Who retired at the age of seventy and became the full-time caretaker of his wife, Billie, who continually became more disabled with Alzheimer's and dementia. At the age of ninety, Owen totally exhausted and, during the last months of Covid, contracted phenomena and died. Billie passed six weeks later. I have not known and more loving and devoted man and husband who truly lived the vows of a 65-year marriage.
