A Mother's Love

by Mario PIERRE

"Can you think of any love greater than a father's love?" old Walter asked.
"A mother's love. It's second only to God's love," Ravin replied.
"Hmm... that is yet to be proven," muttered Walter.
"OK. Let me tell you a story. There once lived a man who fell madly in love with a girl.
But she was so resentful of the affection between the man and his mother that she rejected him.
The man kept begging her, until one day she announced, "I'll marry you on one condition."
"I'll do whatever you want," swore the fool.
"Go kill your mother and bring me her heart."
Although revolted by such a cruel request, his obsession with the girl blinded him.
One night, after stabbing his mother, he took her heart out and raced to offer it to his lover.
While running, he stumbled and fell, knocking his head against the pavement. He stood up, picked the heart from the dust and was about to go on when he distinctly heard a raspy whisper coming from the throbbing heart.
"Are you hurt, son?" it said.

"A myth! Who could testify to that?" Walter mocked.
"I can. You see, that man... was me."

Some might say it's an old legend. But many swear by it. The story goes that in the old days, in a remote village in India, a son murdered his mother and brought her heart to his wicked lover. While he was running with the heart still beating in his hands, he stumbled and fell down, hitting his head against a stone. The heart rolled into the dust. He picked it up and went on. Instead of cursing or blaming him for murdering her, the mother's heart, in her last breath, asked her son if he was hurt in his fall... To this day, to illustrate the lovingkindness of mothers, old folks still tell that story to children.
