Little Hot Summer Messes

Summer Break Downs

by Jessica Wheeler

The scorching sun is signaling that summertime is here.

While watchful ones are wiggling in every classroom chair.

For soon, the final bell will ring to bring their break this year,

And end the sound of silent spring for parents everywhere.

Mid-June, I must succumb to this; by August, I am shot.

No need to be presumptuous; I'll tell you quite a lot.

Remembering rambunctiousness that happens on the spot,

Their monster metamorphosis when it's too freakin' hot.

My darling kids turn into restless rivals right away.

“She took my doll,” “She called me weird,” “SHE DOESN'T WANT TO PLAY.”

My words in June, “Girls, please be kind,” “Don't fight, enjoy this day.”

Turn into thoughts of doorstep drops, and offered kids with pay.

Wherever we may venture, they will enter with sweet twirls,

That escalate quite quickly to tornado spinning whirls.

The beach, the park, the play dates,  yet, so BORED are these poor girls.

My angels can't conceal their summer horns beneath their curls.

They’re sassy, tiny, sweaty, whiny,  but how CUTE are they...

Born this way on purpose so we don't ship them away

When they are the most adorable though, I must say...

Is in September waving from the bus on their first day.
