In Memoriam

Jane

by Debbie D'Arcy

The first time that I noticed her
She walked into the square,
Her turban worn sartori'lly
To hide her loss of hair.

Her friends would turn and smile at her
And greet her at the bar,
As though she made their night complete,
They'd treat her like a star!

For Jane would love their company
And sparkle like a queen.
No staying in, alone, at home -
She'd crave the social scene.

Her life had not been kind to her
In matters of the heart.
She'd sought to find her joie de vivre
In France - a brand new start.

But cancer first would cut so deep,
She battled loss and pain.
Then ten years on, another bout
Would test her will again.

Jane's mantra was to seize the day,
She'd known this her life long.
Her friends, her art, her poetry -
All this would keep her strong.

But though with heart she rose anew,
Within herself, a foe,
Who'd strike her such a bitter blow,
Unleash a fatal flow.

And doctors would do all they could
To stem that massive bleed -
They gave her days with little hope,
Then switched off all life's feed.

And so, Dear Jane, a wish I make
Wherever you may be -
Your laughter will ring out with joy,
Your soul forever free!

Jane died on 7 July 2023 from a massive brain haemorrhage. She was 82 (and looked 20 years younger).

A friend I knew for 18 years after meeting her in SW France where I was living part-time. Despite lots of draw-backs, she simply loved life, was forever curious and interested in people, an avid reader, a nature lover and an artist. She could walk into a room unaccompanied and quickly hold everyone's attention.

She suffered two aggressive forms of breast cancer and survived them but her hair, unusually, never grew back after the first bout of chemo. That said, she made turban-wearing an art form.

I was only speaking to her on the phone a few weeks ago. She sounded in good form, was on a new exercise/diet regime and feeling the benefits. She never complained of headaches or anything that might predispose her to a brain haemorrhage.

Today 20th July her ashes will be scattered in her favourite garden at a friend's home in France. RIP Jane.
