Special Meal

by jake cosmos aller

In 1979, Salmon Rubinstein went to Korea in the Peace Corps. After basic Korean and public health training, he worked at a rural health center in Gapyeong, a small South Korean mountain farming town, northeast of Seoul.

One day, his office invited him to the Village chief's house, who shared the same birthday. During dinner, the Korean gentleman sitting next to him said “Dog meat” indicating the meat.

Salmon had to decide what to do, eat it or not? He chose the diplomatic solution and ate it, assuring everyone it was great. And drank more soju to wash it down.

Note: dog meat was commonly eaten in Korea until the late 80¢??, nowadays it is illegal and widely considered barbaric as Koreans now have dogs as pets. But there are a few underground places that still serve it. Apparently, it is still popular in North Korea, and rural parts of China, Vietnam, and the Philippines. But not eaten in Japan.

Soju is the most popular spirit in Korea. They make it from sweet potatoes, potatoes, and rice. It packs quite a punch and is ridiculously cheap. Less than two dollars per bottle.
