Memories of Lee

by Paul McFarland

Childhood Friendship Contest Winner
The mem'ries that I have of Lee
Are from our younger years.
We always were the best of friends,
Through laughter and some tears.

So many times we climbed Mount Battie;
That was always fun.
Straight up the front and halfway up
We'd lie there in the sun.

With mountain granite at our back,
And sunlight on our face,
We'd daydream of the things we'd do
In some exotic place.

Cowboys and Indians, hide and seek
Would fill a summer day,
And kick the can and tag you're it
Were other games we'd play.

As we grew up, our paths diverged;
We went our separate ways.
But when we'd meet from time to time,
We'd talk about old days.

I know someday we'll meet again
In some exotic place
With mountain granite at our back,
And sunlight on our face.

Lee lived just across the gully from me. We were best friends from early childhood through high school. We lost touch for many years, when we both found our future wives. We got together a few times just before he died.
