Lessons learned on the street

Making New Friends

by BlueMarble

Once a man with millions

Stood at the top of his climb -

The market crashed and he went down -

It happens all the time

But not to this most powerful guy

It hurt and here's the reason why- -

That little guy that once stood 'neith his feet

Now stood beside him in the gutter on the street.

The guy reached out and took his hand

He led his steps to dryer land

         "Perhaps you don't remember me

I was there on the climb you see

I was with you all the way to the top

And I was there for the drop.

Now that we're here there's work to be done,

I promise, our life will be more fun."

As he spoke the stars glowed in his eyes

The wisdom he uttered was a surprise,

"The first thing we have to do

Is find a place that’s right for you.

See that building across the street

They'll shelter us and give us food to eat."

                                        *

Our man . . . we’ll just call him Joe

Nodded his head, where else could he go?

He was in a world he didn't foresee,

He moaned and cried "what's become of me?"

His new friend .... Michael by name,

Seemed to know how to play this game.

Inside the shelter, it was easy to see

There were people much worse off than he . . .

People there with no shirt on their back

Shoes or socks many would lack.

Tattered and torn

Their clothes were worn.

                                    *                                                        .

"Look around you, what do you see?"

                                    *

“So many souls worse off than me.

It breaks my heart to see such strife.

Where have they been all my life?

See that man over there –

Give him this shirt so he’ll have one to wear”

And so it went through the day,

They both gave all they had away.

With every gift Joe could bestow

In his heart he felt a glow.

Eventually he did return to the top,

But he never forgot what he learned on the drop. .

. .Life on the street may be hard to do,

But a giving hand might pull them through.

The friends he made while on the street

Still give his heart a happy beat.
