Bridge of Dreams

by DragonSkulls

I had a dream that I was in the car with my wife and eight-year old daughter. We were on our way out to eat at my wife's favorite restaurant for her birthday. As we were crossing the Howard Franklin bridge between Tampa and St. Pete, a passing semi blew a front tire and veered right, straight into the side of us. The cement barrier kept us from going over the edge. It was the speeding box truck trying to miss the semi that hit us from behind and plunged our car over the barrier, into the bay water below.

Our seatbelts saved us from the impact. Upside down, the car started sinking and panic set in. I yelled, "Everybody relax and roll down the windows. Let your seatbelt loose and once the car is almost full of water, take a deep breathe and we'll simply swim out." I looked back at my daughter. "Got it?"

She took a breath and calmed down, nodded her head and said, "Yes."

I looked at my wife. "Got it?" I could see the pain in her eyes. She was hiding it for my daughter's sake. Her corner of the car was crushed in. Her legs were trapped, possibly broken.

She slightly smiled with tears swelling in her eyes and lipped, "Save her."

That was all the time we had. I swam to the back seat, pushed my daughter out the window, then grabbed her and swam to the surface. The waves weren't too bad. "Swim to the bridge pillar!" I yelled.

She let go and I dove back into the cold water to save my wife. The car was totally submerged. She had the seatbelt undone but she was stuck there. I desperately tried freeing her legs but they wouldn't budge. I was screaming under the water when she grabbed my arms. I can't even explain it. She had a look of calm on her face when she shook her head, telling me no, it was no use. She was at peace with her fate. Again, she gave me that same tearful smile while touching my face, then exhaled her last breath. We stared in each others eyes as my beloved wife perished.

My daughter and I watched as they hoisted the car, with my wife still inside, from the water.

That's when I woke up. I rolled over, reaching, only to find the empty space beside me again. Minutes later, my daughter crawled into bed with me, crying. She had the exact same reoccurring dream.
