The transformations

by Wendy G

Lindy, aged just two years old, had faced the awful reality, not once but twice.

Life was unpredictable.

People were sometimes not what they seemed. Her family life was normally stable and happy … except for these two terrifying incidents.

When would be the next occurrence? Would she be the next victim?

Could she trust no one? Does everyone change in a horrifying moment into something else, a source of fear? Both times she was totally unprepared.

Mother was preparing her seven-year-old sister for her first big school event. They emerged from the bedroom and …. the fear took over. Little Lindy screamed, and ran for her life, sobbing wildly. Inconsolable.

A couple of months later, Lindy again observed some family excitement. Strange words were being spoken, which she did not understand. Yet her sisters were laughing and happy. It was very confusing. At her age there were still many words and conversations she did not understand.

Once again, Mother disappeared, but this time into her five year-year-old sister’s room. Lindy continued to play happily with the Duplo.

Then great squeals as they emerged. Except for Lindy who uttered a short shrill scream of terror, then turned and ran, sobbing wildly again. Inconsolable.

How does one prepare for this shock? How does one recover from such trauma? What would happen to her when it was her turn?

What if Mother came into her room one day with some horrid idea of transforming her into an object of fear? Was this part of growing into a big girl?

Lindy’s elder sister had been transformed into a lion, with a very realistic costume and face paint. She was performing in the Lion King dance at her first school concert. She looked very fierce.

Lindy’s second sister had been transformed into a ghost. The zig-zag black scar for a mouth and the sinister-looking eyeholes in a white sheet were truly terrifying. She was about to experience her first Halloween outing.
