An open air zoo experience.

Borrowed Wheels

by Claire Tennant

I am blessed that my medical condition caused at birth did not necessitate the permanent use of a wheelchair. As a consequence, I have avoided using them. Stubborn? Oh yeah! Some years ago, after injuring my knee my darling took me to the local hospital, necessitating the use of said commodity from the car to the facility. I could hardly walk. I 'toad the line' there was no choice, but remained stubborn.

Recently we visited an open-air zoo, I was offered the use of a wheelchair. Tempted I succumbed, with regret. Un cushioned, it rattled, over concrete or grassy paths. At every bump, I felt the jarring twinges of discomfort and a desire to scream. There were a few looks of interest rather than concern; these I ignored. My darling drives a car well but failed here; his mate did not do much better. They both pointed out that the chair was ancient and needed attention. My thoughts were that a supportive cushion would have avoided a "red hot derriere', experience that I would wish on no one.

Fresh air and beauty forgotten, I was almost running to the car at the end. The scenery and company were worth it.
