I Am Just A Ghost

by Shelby Egnew

I Am Just A Ghost

I am just a ghost-

always floating in and out

of all the places in my life

that I'd forgotten all about.

Sometimes I'm here,

sometimes I'm not.

Sometimes I wait for them to see me,

but most often, they do not.

I watch them from the darkness

as they go about their lives;

making friends and lovers

while I hide them from my strife.

I don't know how it happened,

but I used to be like them.

Then one day I was gone,

and knew I wasn't whole again.

I am just a shadow

of the things that used to be.

I wonder still, as life goes by,

if anyone remembers me?

Do they remember how I used to laugh?

And how I used to dream?

For though I wait here, haunting,

I'm so much more than what I seem.

I wish that I was real again-

that I remembered how to feel.

I'd write my story with a pen

and close it gently with a seal.

For some young soul

who needs a tale,

of love and loss too stormy

for this broken soul to sail.

And perhaps one day she'll need it,

to move through the vicious gale.

For even if I'm not remembered,

I would lose it all so fast,

to save that girl from walking

through a painful, lonesome past.
