Thoughts between life and death, Earth and God.

Canyon of Time

by Tally Scritchfield

I find myself somewhere new

Somewhere ancient and hazy

A liminal space between life and death

I am standing at the rim of the Great Ravine

A temple in its own right

Sheer stone cliffs burn fiery red

Stars shine between cracks in the rock walls

Illuminating memories, emotions, and loved ones

The pictures of my life play out below my feet

Floating in space like heavy fog off of water

Is this where we go to meet god?

Is he somewhere here?

Watching

Waiting

For my spirit to come and dissolve into his?

I stare

Deep into the Canyon of Time

A river runs, immortal

Black ink stark against clay rich earth

A dragon’s winding path

Scales reflecting crimson

Is this the Lethe?

If I jumped would it catch me?

Could I lose myself in its bright, sparkling darkness?

Legs dangling over the edge of the world

I feel restless

Opportunity itches under my skin

A small leap of faith is all it would take

One step forward

A shift in my weight

And I wonder

What would happen next?
