Arthur's Shining Light

by Debbie D'Arcy

Hypnotic blaze is drawing me
across the sea,
its beaming light
a stunning sight.

And though I long to chase this gold,
my legs are old
and frailer still -
one day I will.

But now I am content to gaze
on starlit rays
on which I soar
forever more.

The picture was taken a fortnight ago on the cliffs near our home on the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea; and I wrote the verse shortly afterwards.

Arthur, a 14 year old border terrier, had been diagnosed with an incurable cancer and had considerably slowed down in his mobility and cognition. Today he passed away. Though this was obviously met with sadness, he had lived a great life with his sister and been disease-free up until this period in his life. That walk was his last.
