My personal journey through life with faith and love

A Journey with Faith

by Megan Sue Bates

Faith changes and evolves over time, just like we do.  When I was a little girl, faith was a song for me: “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” It was so black and white.  Having faith was good, and there was really no other option.  But as I learned more about the world, I realized how many sides there were to every story; how most books are partly true and partly false. The author’s perspective and the demands of society weigh heavily on their words.

I felt suffocatingly trapped in circles of people who interpreted God’s word in such strict terms that it was considered a sin for a woman to take leadership roles or speak their minds. My faith firmly reminded me that God truly loves us all equally, no matter the gender, and I began worshiping on my own.  I would go for a sunrise run along country fields, feeling God’s warmth begin to shine down on me, and hear his whispers in the breeze.  We would talk to one another in this way and wish all of the good things for everyone I love. My faith promises that no matter how many miles I go, we will always make it back home together.

As I began my career teaching young children, my faith radiated back out like sunshine, encouraging everyone to believe in themselves and embrace one another.  As a mother, my faith reflected back at me like a mirror of truth through the sparkling eyes of my children, showing me exactly who I am and guiding me to become who I want to be. As my body and mind degrade from incurable illness, my faith nourishes me.  I smile and look forward to our glorious ending, whenever it may come.
