Eleven-Eleven

Mom died at the age of ninety-two. During her last months,
she kept repeating the digits
‘eleven-eleven’. She would scribble ’11-11’ everywhere, and would tell everyone around:
“ It’s eleven-eleven, isn’t it?”
Exasperated, I told her one morning, “Mom, you know my birthday’s on November eleven,
right?”
“SHUUUSH!” She whispered. “That’s not it, Emily!”
I watched her draw her last breath.
I shivered as I glanced at the wall clock.
It read: “11-11 PM.
