I remember but

I Wish I Could Forget

by Videl Sky

I remember that day, not so long ago,
You held me in your arms - would not let me go.
You reeked of liquor, your makeup smudged and streaked,
And sobbed above me without even letting me speak.

A familiar sight, as this had happened before,
I held tears back, wanting you to leave, to shut the door.
I understood your pain, but it ripped me apart,
Having to comfort you when I was sick in the heart.

I remember another, farther and farther back,
We sat in the car, when I endured your attack.
“You’ve gained so much weight, you should start a diet,”
You cried and told me “Everything I do is for you, just try it!”

I learned to nod, keep my face still and controlled,
do everything you asked - do as I was told.
But you'd cry again, and say I should care.
I smiled and agreed, this new mask I'd wear.

I remember the first time, just barely still there -
The memory like smoke trying to dissipate in air.
We sat at the doctor, I needed emergency surgery,
The very next day I was layed up in the infirmary.

Looking back now, you seemed so very young,
You were growing up too – that thought really stung.
I wish I could speak to you, in this memory I see,
Maybe I’d prevent our sorrow from growing to this degree.

I remember the good times too, our laughter and love,
It’s just, the scary memories push them out with a shove.
But, at the end of the day, after all that we’ve been through.
Two people brought me into this world, and one of them was you.
