Who Is the Good Neighbor?

by Verna Cole Mitchell

Officials of the neighborhood
Had met for monthly meeting.
They started talking business when
They'd finished with their greetings.

The president had minutes read,
Led matters to discuss,
And after that, one member there
Began to make a fuss.

"My neighbor's lawn has not been mowed
The past two months or more.
From looking at tall grass and weeds,
I'm starting to get sore.

It's too bad we who live nearby
This burden have to bear,
For we have our own homes and yards
Requiring our care.

Because their lawn, they do not tend,
Our neighborhood looks bad.
When I walk by their house each day,
To see it makes me sad.

I hear the husband took a fall.
His wife's had surgery.
It's tough that they have had bad luck,
But what is that to me?"

While he complained, one man slipped out
To mow and cut the weeds.
Then he went home and got his wife
To help care for their needs.
