Views from Ocean Road are never to be forgotten

California Road Remembered

by Verna Cole Mitchell

Along the Ocean Road,
Tall mountains, bearded with moss,
Loomed on the right,
While on the left, bright sun
Glinted on an endless expanse
Of smooth sea,
Leaving only a languid wave or two
To foam against rock cliffs.

Light blue sky embraced
The darker ocean
At the horizon.
The clouds above,
Broad scoops of gray and white,
Were loveliest of mountains,
Mirrored in the ocean's face.
Farther along,
Rolling hills lounged
Between jagged rock cliffs
And behind lush fields of green
For a paradise of crops.

Up close, the oil rigs
Were giant fireflies,
Dipping gracefully
To the ground.
Across the highway,
Irrigation pumps spouted
Iridescent sparkles
Into rainbow arcs.

A host of small, multicolored flowers
Ran riotous races beside the coast,
Along with occasional large blossoms
Of purple and gold.
A family of dimpled hills
Was dappled by sunshine and shadow.
The highway ahead
Was bounded on the left
By curtains of tall eucalyptus trees,
And on the right by endless rows
Of fat cabbages and fruit trees.

All this - God's creativity
And man's ingenuity -
Blended in beautiful pictures,
To be long-time remembered.
