A typical morning at work as a cashier.

Good Morning!

by R. Lynn Collett

Good morning!  Did you find everything you need?

Yes, thank you. I came in for this birdseed. It’s on sale at a great price! Of course, I found a few extra things to buy.

I’m not sure what you mean. I consider a box of Good ‘n Plenty a staple, not an extra.  And who doesn’t need a good book to read?  Is this one from the best-seller list?

It is, and I got the last copy. I plan to read it during the snowstorm this weekend.

It sounds like you aren’t the only one with that plan. I’m glad you didn’t miss out! Your total is thirty-one fifty-four.

Thank you.  Here’s a fifty.

Perfect. Thank you.

I just printed it.

You did an excellent job! Sorry, I have to check every large bill. Yours passes! Here’s your change, forty-six cents and eighteen dollars, and your receipt. Thank you!  Enjoy your book and your weekend!

Thank you! I will!

Good morning!

Good morning, young lady. How are you?

I’m good, thank you! How are you?

I’m great. Every day I wake up is a great day.

I like your attitude! The total is fourteen eighty-eight. Would you like your batteries in a bag?

That’s not necessary.  I can put them in my pocket.  They won’t tackle me on my way out, will they?

Not if you run fast enough! Thank you for shopping Menards. Here’s your receipt. Be careful out there in the snow!

I’m always careful. Thank you, young lady. You stay out of trouble!

I’ll try!

Good morning, ma’am!

Are you open?

I am. I see your cart is empty. Do you need help finding something?

I would like six bags of Morton’s Clean and Protect water softener salt.

Okay. Six bags. Will that be everything?

Could I get some help getting them into my car?

Of course! I’ll have someone meet you at the door. Your total is thirty-seven ninety-two. I hope you have someone at home to help you get it inside.

Oh, yes. My grandson is visiting to keep me company during the storm.

How nice! He can shovel sidewalks and read you bedtime stories.

Oh my! Wouldn't that be a switch? I used to read him stories when he was a little boy!

I’ll bet that’s a special memory for him. Your change is eight cents and two dollars. Thank you! Enjoy your weekend with your grandson!
Thank you, dear. It was lovely talking with you.

My pleasure.  I see the carry-out is waiting to help you load the salt. Goodbye!

Good morning!

Hel-lo! How are you this fine day?

I am fabulous! I see you get to install a new water heater today. That’s exciting.

Well, you know, I just wanted to have a little extra fun this weekend.

Despite that twinkle in your eye, I don’t think I believe you. Your fun totals seven hundred six dollars and ninety-eight cents.

I think I need to find a cheaper hobby.

We do sell a nice variety of puzzles if you’d like to try that after your hot water is back.

Great idea. And perfect for a snowy hibernation.

I’d like to spend an afternoon with a puzzle, myself. Here is your receipt. Thank you, and good luck with the water heater!

Thank you. Here’s to no leaks!

Good morning!

Hello.

Will it be just the hammer today?

What?

Did you have anything else?

No.

Oh-kay. Then, your total is fourteen sev...

Add this.

Oh! Sure. Let me just back up here. Alright. With the Pepsi your total is now sixteen twenty-seven.

...

Thank you. Enjoy your day.

You too.

Good morning!  Here, let me help you with that.  Oops!

I should have grabbed a basket.

I try that all the time. I call it impulse control, but I usually just end up balancing everything under my chin. It never works!

I came in for one thing, but I found too many good deals!

Did you at least get the item you came for?

I sure did! Thanks!

I’ll put all of this into bags so you can get out of the store easier than you got to the register!

That’s probably better than watching it roll across the parking lot.

Definitely! Your total is one hundred four dollars and twenty-seven cents.

Is it okay to pay in cash?

Of course! ... Thank you.

I just made it last night.

I’m impressed with your work! You got the watermark and security strip just right.

Do you get a lot of counterfeit bills?

No. But it does happen occasionally. So, I have to check, just in case.

I understand.

Here’s your seventy-three cents and your receipt.  Thank you!  Enjoy your weekend and all of that fresh snow!

Thank you. You, too!

Good morning!

Hello. Just this today.

Sure. That will be one hundred forty dollars and thirty-one cents for the drill.

How much?!

One hundred forty and th...

No. The sign said one hundred eighteen. You people do this to me all the time. It’s ridiculous.

I believe that’s the price after the rebate. I’ll look it up to double-check.

No. I don’t want to hassle with that. Just give me the discount. I spend thousands of dollars here every month.

I’m sorry.  I can’t do anything about that.  The rebate has to be mailed in.

Just forget it. I don‘t want the drill. This is a scam.

Okay. Uh. Goodbye? ... Rude.

Hi.

Good morning! You have the patience of a saint.

I just need to take a deep breath. Good morning. How are you today?

I’m well, thank you! I would like to buy a bag of sidewalk salt and this shovel.

Ah.  This is a wise purchase and will likely be very useful this weekend.

I’m buying it for my elderly neighbor. He just had eye surgery and can’t drive yet.  He needs a new shovel and salt so his son can help dig him out this weekend.

You’re a great neighbor to do this for him. I’m inspired by your kindness! Your total is thirty-three seventy-five.

Thank you for your help. Stay safe out there.

You’re very welcome and thank you, I will! Have a wonderful weekend!

Good morning!
