An unintended signal
Two if by Sea
by Paul McFarland
It was a cold damp night in Boston. Paul Revere and his friend had formulated a plan to warn the countryside if the British were to make a move that night. After agreeing on a signal light, "one if by land, two if by sea", Revere rowed over to Charlestown to await his friend's signal from the old North Church. It had been almost an hour, and a cold breeze was penetrating his coat, but suddenly there is a light from the tower. He springs to his saddle, and as he takes another look, his friend lights up a cigarette.
