Eulogy for my mother Madeline

What Is A Gift?

by DonKip

What is a gift?

A gift is throwing open your kids’ bedroom curtains every morning while cheerily chirping “Rise and Shine” and happily making breakfast for everyone.

A gift is cramming 6 kids plus Dad in a car for holidays at a cottage, keeping them fed and entertained at the beach, then tucking them into makeshift sleeping accommodations at night.

A gift is a cookie jar full of home baked chocolate chip cookies whenever family came around, cherry and elderberry pies made for neighbours, a full meal whipped together whenever friends or relatives unexpectedly showed up.

A gift is singing in the church choir, arranging flowers on the alter and making quilts for those less fortunate.

A gift is welcoming friends and family into your home at any hour, including the very diverse friends of your children, providing them food and a place to sleep, all with a big smile and warm heart.

A gift is cheering loudly at football and basketball games, at school plays and concerts, at dance recitals and equestrian meets, at graduations and weddings – and especially when new grandkids arrived.

A gift is refereeing shenanigans like whip cream fights and wet tea towel snapping contests, children breaking kitchen tables in two while horsing around, and teenagers sneaking in basement windows at 3 in the morning.

A gift is soothing wounded egos after losing a game, a tough day at school, difficulties at work and troubles in relationships.

A gift is always being happy, finding the positives in the world and not going more than 3 sentences without a chuckle, a giggle or a laugh.

A gift is showing us that no matter what challenges you encounter, you always have family to rely on and help you through.

Mom, Gramma, Gram, Great Gramma, Madeline, Matz, Auntie Matz, Mrs. K – whatever you knew her by, she gave us all many gifts.  She was indeed a great role model, one to be forever cherished and admired because the world was indeed a better place with her in it. Hopefully each of us can carry on her legacy by sharing the gifts she gave us and pass them along to our own family and friends.

Thanks Mom for giving us the greatest gift of all – you!

PS. Enjoy your reunion with Dad in heaven, and keep cheering us on from the best seat in the house!

Nonfiction Writing Contest contest entry

My mother Madeline passed away in 2022 after a great life leaving lasting impressions on everyone she met, most of all our family (6 children, 18 grandkids, 9 great grandkids and counting.) While we are a diverse lot, we still get along very well, just as Mom & Dad taught us.
