Looking back at the past

We

by Willie P. Smith

It was very cold and windy,
We had our collars up,
We ran into a deli
To have a hot cup.

She took a sip of coffee
And looked up at me.
She whispered, "I love you,"
That I could easily see.

My love for her was like water
Coming from each pore.
I looked at her and whispered,
Honey, I love you more.

The deli was full of people
But we didn't care.
Our love took us to another place,
No one else was there.

Her hand was warm
While holding mine.
We both lost track
Of all worldly time.

The wind stopped blowing, the rain stopped too,
I guess it's time to go.
We never learned a thing
We didn't already know.

Now I'm old and she is gone,
My memories will last forever.
I'll never forget that rainy day,
And the deli that got us out of the weather.

I was in my home town about five years ago. The deli is still there and it is still open. I went inside to look around. The deli had been upgraded, and our table was no longer there, but all my wonderful memories were. Oh! To be young again.
