Child Inside

by Mark Jackson

There’s a child inside me, broken and small

Turned, frightened, curled like an embryo

In need of safety, protection and warmth

Forgotten, hiding and frozen in time

He needs love like he never knew before

No tenderness could ever breach those walls

Hiding deep within the centre of me

But sometimes he comes crawling to the fore

Together we cry, Sobbing over loss

Pain; inflicted to feel something real

Known him since twenty-one but there before

Maybe he’ll fade our connections abate

When that day comes will I still be complete?
