Should we revisit old wounds?

The Great Divide

by Alice Lund

The great divide.

Splits a life I live in two distinctive sides.

One's still waiting for apologies you hide.

Do I dare touch the dust?
Scratch my hands along the rust?

Is it my time?

Will I find myself not strong enough to keep my fingers down?

A kid again just waiting for my feet to hit the ground?

Are you strong enough to face the fear of living with those sounds?

I hope you’ve tried.

You never show it, but I hope sometimes you cry.

We share the burden of a trauma locked inside.

All I want to know is that it hurts you, too.

Give me a sign.
Give me a clue.

The great divide

Across the line we walk an ordinary life.

Don’t tell me why.

Just look me in the eyes.

Feel my pain. Apologize.

And if you can’t. And if you won’t.

If I can’t, If I won’t.

I will still love you.

I forgive you.
