Worst fear

by Willie P. Smith

I am eighty-six years old.  I have faced fear more times than I can count.
I faced fear many times in Vietnam.  At the end of my service, I chose
A profession that provided fear on an hourly basis.  In nineteen sixty-two
I joined the San Diego, Ca. police department and retired in nineteen ninety-four. During my time on the SDPD, Fear was my partner a big part of the time.  I faced fear when I was sent to Los Angeles to assist that department during the Watt riots. I was also in the middle of the San Diego race riots in sixty-nine.  Hand-made explosives and other deadly weapons were used against law enforcement. This was A scary time in my life.  I've suffered numerous bone fractures in various portions of my body.  I was injured twice by drivers trying to avoid a ticket.  A young woman tried to commit suicide by jumping off a building in downtown San Diego.  I got to her in time to catch her by the belt as she started to fall forward.  My big fear was being pulled off the roof with her.  One of my worst fears was receiving six bullet holes in the driver's door of my patrol car.  The shots came from a sniper who was not apprehended.  I was scared when the Black Panther Party posted a bounty of Five thousand dollars on me, dead or alive.  I was frightened when a wife stabbed me in the right shoulder with a butcher knife.  I was attempting to break up a fight between her and her husband.  An elderly man ran a red light in front of my police motorcycle.  I struck the vehicle broadside and received fractures to both arms and a fractured right knee.  From my service to the Country and community, I have faced fear more times than I want to remember. The worst fear I faced was when my wife broke her neck in a vehicle accident.  Her heart received a blow that removed it from its proper position.  The doctor said she was in critical condition and may not make it.  Thanks to God, she recovered.  These fears are not all-inclusive.  I've had other fears but not enough paper.
