You could cut the tension with a chopstick. I was 8 and she, my sister, was 11. The wonton and Lo Mein remnants on platters between us and our father with his wife. We had flown in that day from the opposite side of the country, it was our first time meeting her. My sister sat uncomfortably. I didn’t even like Chinese food. The check and four fortune cookies arrived.
The words fell out of my mouth. “Do you want your fuckin’ cookie?” That hadn’t come out right. We broke into laughter, went home, and then watched the movie “Airplane!”.
