What makes a man: Betrayal?

The Man I Am Today

by Mark Jackson

A big brother is meant to step in

Help his smaller weaker siblings out

When it was my brother's turn

To help me with a bully

A boy much older than me

He just sat there and watched

As my head was held underwater

for what felt like far too long

I came up crying with rage and frustration

Not that anyone could tell

The betrayal was what hurt the most

From that day forward my brother and me

Always fought our arguments became physical

We used to fight like cat and dog

Not sure if I was the cat or the dog

Whichever one would lose

He had two years on me

Two years bigger than me

Two years stronger than me

Two years cleverer than me too

Now I’ve got 5 inches

And 20 kilograms on him

24 years of martial arts experience

A black belt

We don’t fight anymore

I guess he is still the clever one

But, without that moment of betrayal

Would I have learnt self-reliance?

Would I be the man I am today?
