And Never Knew
You Took the Wind
You listened to the lessons in
the stories that I told,
and nestled in my shadow when
the winter wind turned cold.
I kept you close, beneath my wings
when shadows came to call,
and when the wind began to shift
I fought the coming fall.
I pleaded with the dark at night,
the very moon beseeched,
and painted countless portraits of
those stars you never reached.
You always felt a step behind,
did I just walk too fast?
I watched you slip behind my stride,
each step until your last.
You told me once, you'd chase the dawn
to watch me touch the sun.
You said the light would keep you warm,
if only you could run.
Without you here to trail behind,
my shadow, it turns cold,
and when you fell, my light grew dim,
with words to stay untold.
For when you went, you took the wind
I guess you never knew;
that if I ever touched the sun,
I flew because of you.
