Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
A boy has text missing from his history book

Inherited Books

by Pamusart

He looked inside his hist’ry book
and saw that pages were torn out
He asked his friend to take a look
But neither boy had any clout

He saw some other pages then
Graffiti written on the print
He counted ‘til he got to ten
Of what they said, he had no hint

He went and told the principal
who said there were no other texts
The printing was invisible
He’d never pass the hist’ry  test

He didn’t have a phone to use
He couldn’t cruise the internet
Whichever way he looked he’d lose
All money's used for food and rent

He checked the public library
to find that there’s no copy there
No internet for him to see
‘cause sometimes life just wasn’t fair

He went to county’s public school
The students there were mostly black
The board would just refuse to rule
if black folks gave them too much flack

The books came from an all white school
His school could not afford its own
By now some other things looked cool
because in school he'd never grown

He soon was cutting out of class
He might as well; his books don’t give
an education that will last
or teach a way that he could live

The county didn't help at all
The board ignored them,  that was true
Their pleas had splashed against a wall
‘cause school boards could be racist too

Just think about it if you will
Imagine that he is your child
I wonder if you’d be so still
or treat it like it’s only mild

My husband told me about a fellow student. They were both in a gifted school. For this black student, he managed to get into this prestigious high school. But he said that the books they got came from a white school. And the white kids would deface them and tear pages out,

This was 60 years ago. But do not be fooled. The schools are still not equal. We expect our kids to do well in school, but against such odds very few do.

When black parents take their grievances to the school board, they are either ignored or the matter is written down in some minutes somewhere that never see the light of day

How can we expect kids to want to go to school when they can not get the books they need for their class? Or their books are ruined because kids in another school decide to ruin them for kicks

I know there are some dedicated teachers who make copies of the pages missing for each child for rach subject
