Using the comma correctly will make one a better writer.

When to Use the Comma

Did you know the comma
is the hardest worker in
the world of punctuation, and
mastering its use can definitely
make one a more proficient writer
 
Here are several ways the comma will
be helpful in clarifying your writing
 
Use a comma before coordinating conjunctions
You know words when using words
such as and, but, or and nor
 
Also use it when joining two complete thoughts
I went to the store, and I brought chips and a dip.
 
After introductory clauses preceding a main idea
Exhausted after a swim, I rested in the sun.
 
And of course, when writing a list
like bananas, blackberries, blueberries
 
Ever hear of non-restrictive clauses?
They provide additional information
but not really necessary for understanding
so set the sucker off with commas
Janice love to exercise, especially yoga,
but sometimes she over does it.
 
How about appositives?
Fancy name for renaming
the noun next to it. My favorite song,
“Yesterday,” was sung by the Beatles
 
Then there are Coordinate adjectives.
Two words naming the same noun equally
Beautiful, burgeoning flower   
 
And very important to use a comma to
Separate the date from the year
April 30, 2000
 
Make friends with that little dot with the tail
It is truly the most useful form of punctuation
Use the comma properly and it will
elevate all that you handwrite or type
And kids please be sure to use commas
when you text to avoid misunderstandings.

In this round of Teach Me Something, the theme is writing.

Ex: How To--
Craft great comedy, horror, true crime, suspense thriller, etc., or some aspect of it.
Write effective dialogue, character/plot development, world building, etc., or some aspect of it.
Write specific forms of poetry or poetic devices (eg. alliteration, assonance, consonance)
Use literary devices (eg. irony, foreshadowing)
Grammar/mechanics (eg. Use of commas, hyphens, italics, word choice, spelling tips for tricky words)

**Write a tutorial or tips for others to learn about or improve some facet of their writing
**Your title or subtitle should say what that topic is
**Recommended word count: 100-1000 words
