Pathological Jealousy

Othello Syndrome

by Terry Reilly

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.
I left for work, she kissed my cheek.

The start of just another week.

I crossed the street, and laid in wait.

I'd told my boss that I'd be late.

I hid behind a chestnut tree,

wondering what I might see.

I knew that I'd been double crossed,

possession of her heart was lost.

No longer did she reach for me

each night, in bed, she silently

rolled over on her other side,

"I love you dear" she blithely lied.

I sensed her attitude had changed,

our daughter said I was deranged.

But she would share her mother's view,

denying what my instinct knew.

Each morning I would scan the sheets

for semen stains, the mark of cheats.

When'eer I looked her in the eye

her gaze, averted, told me why

I should not trust her loving words,

bland reassurance, for the birds.

.....

The tall man crossed the busy street,

stepping out on nimble feet.

Heading for my oak front door,

He seemed to know what lay in store.

At last I've spotted my wife's beau,

revenge is coming, he won't know.

He steps across the threshold, then,

my vengeance will be "now" not "when."

The lovers fondle in the hall,

upon their union will befall,

two lethal strikes from my sharp knife,

robbing each one of their life.

.....

Alas, I may have got it wrong,

Logic weak, emotion strong.

The postman was my wife's best friend,

Mistakenly their lives did end.

The blade must now take my life, too,

My darling wife I've misjudged you.

Our spilled blood mingles on the floor,

too late, I know that je t'adore.
