a 75-word story
Mussel
by Bill Schott
On Vieques, Puerto Rico, our platoon was shown how to get the mussel out of a conch shell. Piercing the lip of the mussel and then hanging it up, it pulled out as the shell dropped away.
The next morning a couple of us went out to claim the shell, but watched it as it slowly crawled away.
“It’s haunted!” someone said, before realizing, of course, that a hermit crab had claimed it first.
