My Friend the Driver

by Bryce 1

Down in the circuit where the cars are driving fast
They say those who aren't first are just considered last
Whirling round the track going a thousand miles an hour
As crowds watch from tv's connected to tv towers

The day's race was one to remember
I'll never forget that day in November
My friend was driving and he was in the lead
What happened next haunts my memory

He was hit by a sidewinder and flipped in the air
The whole place was silent and only stared
He came to a stop and they looked for the man
And when the people came over the fire began

From my seat in the house I watched in tears
What came true that day was my worst fears
You never think it would happen to you
But life can get lonely and bitter and blue

He rolled out like a sacrificial lamb
And plopped to the ground, not going to plan
I raced out the house and went to my car
And raced down the highway like a blistering star

I got to the track and the smoked had cleared
His outcome was worse than what I had feared
His body was burnt and his voice was hoarce
The image of a man had died on that course

Years have passed since that fateful day
But I remember it like it was yesterday
I still visit him every now and then
My racecar driver first place friend

His grave is marked with the name of Mac
But his life lives on down at the track
Greatness is born and it never comes back
But it's hard to accept that saddening fact
