Where the Sun Falls

by Jessica Wheeler

The author has placed a warning on this post for sexual content.

He stands against
the wind and waves,
in fading light and time,

to wait for me
where summer suns
dip low.

His eyes,
golden and troubled,
catch my stare, they
reel me in

to dangle
where the moon and love
both loom.

The rays reach out
to touch
our salty skin- just
one last time

before we trade
the day
for one more night.

Then I melt
like liquid gold for him,
to spread across
the sea,
when we sink
like stones and secrets
into sand.

And he moves
beneath the cover of
my August sun-kissed skin,

he strips
my every whisper
of farewell.

Our ragged breath
is rising, falling,
following the waves-

drawn to drown
the dreaded
coming end.

The daylight takes
its final golden stretch, and I'm
in love.

But I turn my back
on the horizon's view;

to watch
the summer sunset
in his eyes.
