Heaven or Hell?

Afterlife

by Terry Reilly

The fires of Hell consume the sinners' souls,

incinerating over red hot coals.

The pitchfork-wielding imps show no desire

to blunt their prongs or dampen down the fire.

The acrid reek of sulphur sears and chokes

the heads of the condemned, bowed by steel yolks.

Their bellows, wails and shrieks express their pain.

They only wish that they could live again.

Though Hades is suffused with grief and tears,

at least you'll meet some interesting peers.

They say Pol Pot knows lots of dirty jokes

and Stalin eulogises murdered folks.

The place above, for some's, bereft of glee.

The place below's a better choice for me!

Dark Sonnet writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
*This contest brought to you by The Little Workshop of Horrors club*

There are many types of sonnets with many rules and rhyme schemes. You are allowed to construct any type of sonnet you wish, as long as its format is listed somewhere within the post for voters to see.

Contest Parameters:
---Must be dark-themed.
---No puppies or unicorns (or their gentle, fluffy ilk) unless they are possessed, evil, rabid, undead, in advanced stages of decay, used as food, or the victims of violence.
---All sonnets require iambic pentameter; do the best you can.

This differs from a classic Shakespearean sonnet only in the use of an alternative rhyme scheme.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
