A Wreathed Shakespearean Sonnet

Melanie

by Patrick Bernardy

Dark Sonnet Contest Winner

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.

                 Her grave-stone sits atop a graceful hill—
                 her screams are shrill on nights of chilly dark.
                 By day, a lark might perch and peck its fill;
                 by night, her will is wroth to smite its mark.

                 Our Melanie’s within that keening howl.
                 She's on the prowl, his skin beneath her nails.
                 Her rape unveils her fate to haunt and growl;

                 her parents cowl their shame for why she wails.

                 The monster found his prize between her thighs—
                 Her helpless cries ignored by those who knew
                 her claims were true of madness in his eyes.
                 Their guilty sighs can never pay what's due.

                 Her grave-stone sits atop a mound of rage—
                 This vengeful hate she shrieks will never age.
