Life of a hamster

Hamster

by Cecilia A Heiskary

Hamster with the stubby tail
Why do you look so frail?
Your cheeks look very fat
Is it to scare off cats?

You like to live alone
Very territorial about your zone
Your incisor teeth never stop growing
They are nice and sharp for sowing

You are a promiscuous thing
Getting pregnant with a fling
You chase the male away
He isn't invited to stay

Little hamster you multilpy fast
Two to four litters you have surpassed
Your gestation is 15-22 days
Like clockwork with no delays

You live only two to three years
You are a great companion without fears
Your whole life is designed
To leave your legacy behind

This poem is for my friend Angel Debbie. She is the hamster queen.

There are over 20 different species of hamsters. The European hamster is critically endangered.

Hamsters are one of the only species that can run backwards. They are born blind and when they grow-up they are nearsighted and color blind.

They are native to Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa

The Syrian hamster is the most popular and was brought to the US in 1930 for companion pets.

Gross fact: they eat their own poop to get all the nutrients.
Fun fact: Cheeks are for hoarding and if the find themselves in water they puff their cheeks with air to float.
