November 22, 1963

so quiet after three gunshots
and that silence was eerie everyone was in shock . . .and so confused. . . people walked like wooden soldiers there were no smiles nor laughter only a few tentative whispers . . .they were afraid. . . there was a heaviness in the air parents pulled children closer to them all seemed to move in slow motion . . .if they moved at all. . . people stared with horrified eyes like the world had been frozen in time they were waiting for news . . .two had been shot. . . gathered at the hospital Dallas police scurried in then rushed back out doctors and nurses ran about . . .priests were called in. . . unverified announcements were made then changed minutes later the waiting was endless . . .until the final announcement. . . he is dead from a bullet to his head a woman screamed and the world began to bleed |

Originally, I was going to write one poem about President Kennedy's assassination. However, there was just too much information so I wrote four different poems, each highlighting areas where the mood and intensity of the time struck me. We were afraid and vulnerable.
