I Cast No Shadow

Murdered … me murdered. Astonished would be an apt descriptor. Looking down from the landing at my dead body takes astonishment to a new level. My shadow, which I have somehow entered, paces the landing. My killer and husband, Pierre, tidies up inside and pauses, surveying the crime scene. He seems satisfied.

An almost empty bottle of Mums sits by a wilted rose in a vase. Two glasses: one empty one almost full, an open cigarette case, mine, my purse on the floor by the chair, my cheap high heels … I cringe hoping no one notices.

Pierre strolls out of view, I presume into the bedroom.

That's his ploy then; I jumped while he slept.

Ah, the cops. There he comes pretending to have awakened.

"Uh … what is it officer. We were asleep."

Smart, Pierre, saying 'we'. I try to get someone's attention. No one notices a shadow. Are you all blind? He killed me you idiots ... murder! Dammit! Shadows can't scream.

"Oh no! Oh, my God, NO!" Nice acting, Pierre, like me in bed. Christ! They're comforting him.

I'm back on the landing. Look dammit! The body casts no shadow. It has no shadow!
