The Magic Bumbershoot

by pome lover

THE MAGIC BUMBERSHOOT

As I was running through the rain, the drops turned into hail.
A sign on yonder windowpane said, "Bumbershoots For Sale."
I raced inside and picked one out, its color, fiery red.
Its handle was a wild boar's snout, with tusks astride its head.

It had glass eyes, so real it seemed, they gave me quite a start.
They moved; I screamed! Staccato beats began inside my heart.
The snout said, "Do not be afraid; I'm friendly, you will see.
We're going to a grand parade; just hold on tight to me."

As we ascended in the air, my bumbershoot and I
The weather cleared, the sun came out, and I could see the sky.
And down below the ground was white, the snow a glistening sheen.
But there was movement, too, I saw, in this enchanting scene.

Descending slowly from on high, I strained to see the ground,
And there were big horn, elk and deer all moving without sound --
"Parading" down the mountainside, in mother nature's show,
They searched for food that seemed to hide beneath the fields of snow.

It was the most amazing sight that I had ever seen!
I watched their trek with pure delight; their bodies, strong and lean.
They moved in groups and blended in with rocks and snow and brush.
They'd stop to eat, and then descend; their coats were thick and lush.

My red umbrella in the sky made some look up my way.
I waved and said a silent, "Hi! You sure have made my day."
Then we began to leave this place where mountain creatures roam.
I gave a sigh, and turned my face toward Mom and Dad and home.

When I alighted on the ground, my bumbershoot held high,
I pushed the button, closed it down, and looked him in the eye.
"You're magical, a treasure rare, a wonder through and through.
No bumbershoot would ever dare compare itself to you."

"Well I should certainly hope not!" he said, with raised eyebrow;
"For I can go as far as your cerebrum will allow."
He smiled. "I'm glad you are my friend, and anxiously await
Our next adventure to begin, so we can levitate."

When I lived in Colorado, I would see scenes like that. Beautiful!
