Someone Has To Do It

by Beck Fenton

Coming home in the light of dawn is my normal, everyday routine. I don't need a clock to tell me when to get up and when to finally sleep.

I have a huge breakfast at night just before I head out. I don't eat again all night. I can't. You'd think I could, but no. The sights and smells and even sounds make my stomach turn.

My phone never rings because I don't have any social life. I'm not really lonely. Okay, maybe on those balmy summer nights when it would be fun having someone to talk with.

I paint rocks when I'm lonely. I paint rocks and hide them all over the city. Children find them. Sometimes I see their faces light up when they discover a rock. It sure offsets my job as a janitor in the morgue.
