Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level
A Villanelle poem.

The Villanelle

If I could write a Villanelle,
it's French, and it's arcane
those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.

I suffer with its rules to quell
five tercets with one quatrain.
If I could write a Villanelle

Like Thomas, Plath, and Joyce, as well
two rhymes and two refrain
those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.

Another rule there is to tell
lines one and three repeat again
If I could write a Villanelle.

A word of warning I must expel
the rules will stretch your brain
Those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.

Time to pick up some Zinfandel
this format drives me insane.
If I could write a Villanelle,
those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.
