Poetry Is Spontaneous

by Reese Turner

To the challenge of presenting a recipe
For the writing of readable poetry, by me:
First, please, define of just what to write,
Of what subject are you hungry to bite?

‘Cause random rambles are too confusing
Nor thrilling, inspiring or amusing.
Once message decided, making sense,
Then check brain’s kitchen for ingredients:

Mere words are bland, they’re everywhere,
Meaningless unless blended in with care.
While feelings add flavor, when mixed in,
So, think deep and wide ‘fore you begin.

Start with a spice to whet appetite for
A tasty zing - makes them want more!
Then, fold the story with nuggets of clever,
A pinch of irony, but too soon? Never!

Layer the story so the interest rises
Don’t expose conclusions: Sprinkle surprises…
Then, when all’s been added, all mixed in,
Read it out loud- and mix it again!

Don’t leave half-baked. Don’t over-cook.
Simmer in your heart – not “by the book”.
Closing advice: A poem is not like a cake:
Not like ice, it’s a flow, a journey you take!
