Slow Dancing in the Dark

by Analie Shepherd

Not sure why all the rush,
I got here soon enough, it seems.
Lazy doughnut Saturday mornings,
rainy walks and windy nights.
All alone on dusty back stairs,
Sweet Caroline pulling me
down, down, down.
Slender coke bottle held loosely,
forgotten in the longing for something more.
Not sure why all the rush,
I got here soon enough, it seems.
White dress, laughing, dancing-
too young to know the truth,
walking down a winding path.
Laundry in the lazy breeze,
jumbled days, nights too brief
all fleeting, falling through my hands
red wine and jack-in-the-box,
hours of plenty and hours of loss.
A jumble of lemon cake with lavender jam,
Christmas eves, and garden walks.
Not sure why all the rush,
I got here soon enough, it seems.
Slow dancing in the dark,
thinking back with silent grief.
Arms hung loosely, I keep my peace
and wish the clock still chimed.
Ice tea and setting sun,
silence all around.
Settling softly,
Softly.
Not sure why all the rush.
