I Try To Fly My Words

by LisaMay

I joined FanStory to try to fly
my words like a kite in your sky.
I wondered if I could truly belong.
I aspired to rise higher, but my tremulous song
was tangled in a tree’s knotty grip –
blown off course by a harsh discourse
that caused my pride to trip.

My tail was tugged when I hoped that I’d be hugged.
So I picked apart the pieces then applied some glue,
added a cliche or two for a new review.
Then I read it through, and thought:
Will that do?

No, not yet, for its quality caused regret.
My patchwork piece looked so home-made,
so I tried much harder to gain a better grade.

I took a closer look at how other kites were done,
to see why
they flew higher to the sun.
Their makers seemed to be having so much fun.
Their kites were controlled by words that flew,
as they dipped and soared, they twirled to delight.
With skill, some knew exactly what to do –
their flights of fancy set my heart alight.

Poetry then became a busy game;
I practised hard so I could do the same.
I’ve found a lot of joy with my brand new toy –
now I can build MY kite with a well-made frame.

I’ve arrived at a stage where I feel I’ve earned my place.
People like my poems – there’s a smile upon my face.
I form and adorn my poems with grace and style.
It takes quite a while to make one gain your smile,
and even more time if I want to connect by rhyme.

My kite will show what it’s like to be me –
to share my own individuality.
When I’m happy or sad, when I laugh or shout,
it all gives me something to write about.
If I’m angry or messed, if I’m vexed or distressed,
by writing it all down I can get it off my chest
and begin to feel blessed.
I’m a detailed observer in our crazy human zoo,
and it seems to me that all of you are, too.

I’m obsessed with it of course, poetry feeds my soul –
it dominates my life like it’s swallowed me whole.
I sit here at the window and I watch the birds,
then I think how best I could write the scene in words.
I sometimes think in rhyme, well, most of the time;
and I check for my reviews like they are the hottest news.

To create imagination’s world, when we fly our flags unfurled,
we can share insights and frights as we use our days and nights.
Our kite-words find a friend, or help a heart to mend;
they can fly across the miles to turn our frowns to smiles.
When we need to cry and mope, they soothe and help us cope
while they bring us harmony and a brighter glimpse of hope.

Between you and me, in this FanStory community,
that’s how our words can be, for all eternity.
Such is a writer’s legacy.
Don’t you agree?
